Academic Advising

Trio

The Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) are Federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to postbaccalaureate programs.

TRIO/SSS Services
Student Support Services Program

Student Support Services (SSS) is one of eight TRIO programs and is a federally funded program that provides:

  • Opportunities for academic development
  • Assistance with basic college requirements
  • Motivation and support needed to complete a college degree
Program Description:

Through a grant competition, funds are awarded to institutions of higher education to provide opportunities for academic development, assist students with basic college requirements, and to motivate students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education. Student Support Services (SSS) projects also may provide grant aid to current SSS participants who are receiving Federal Pell Grants (# 84.063). The goal of SSS is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants.

Why use the TRIO/SSS Tutoring Center?

Tutoring can help you in two ways; not only can you achieve higher scores on tests and a better grade in your class, but you will learn to understand the subject in a more comprehensive way. This can be especially helpful when your major requires more than one math course in sequence, and success in later courses depends on the skills learned in earlier courses.

How do I meet with a TRIO/SSS Tutor?

Please come to the TRIO/SSS Office in MC110 to meet with your advisor and complete a brief referral form, or call us to set up an appointment to meet with your advisor!

Where will I meet with the tutor?

The tutors are located in MC 110A, in the TRIO/SSS advising area.

What should I bring to a tutoring appointment?

Bring your textbook, notes, assignment descriptions, worksheets, etc. In general, bring anything you have that might be helpful.

What if I have to cancel an appointment?

Just stop by our office or call us at (216) 687-2402 to let us know that you have to cancel.

Who are the TRIO/SSS tutors?

The TRIO/SSS tutors are a group of dynamic, qualified CSU undergraduate students who have demonstrated mastery of the subject area they tutor. Most TRIO/SSS tutors have previous tutoring experience and have worked extensively with the TRIO/SSS student population. They are very approachable and receptive to questions, so there is no need to be intimidated by their expertise!

Peer Mentoring

Want to meet an upper-classman with the same major or interests as you? Need to vent? Are you unsure of the policies and procedures or resources available at CSU? Want to learn more about scholarship or internship opportunities? Want to talk with another student who may have gone through similar college experiences?

The peer mentor/mentee relationship is an integral part of the TRIO/SSS program. Our mission is to support first-year TRIO/SSS students in making the transition from high school to Cleveland State University by creating a supportive environment linking them to the many services and resources that are available. Also, the program assists with goal setting and offers social events each semester to connect students in the program and with the peer mentors!
