Students and faculty attend the first OSM Meet and Greet, hosted by department chair Dr. Oya Tukel

On September 16, 2010, the Department of Operations and Supply Chain Management held a Meet and Greet for all OSM majors, or those interested in becoming OSM majors.

The meet and greet provided students with an opportunity to interact with the OSM Department Chair, Dr. Oya Tukel, and other faculty members on a variety of topics, including courses being offered, the best way to find internship and co-ops in the field, strategies to use during an interview, and more.

In case you weren't able to attend, here is a brief summary of what went down:

• After everyone in attendance briefly introduced themselves, Dr. Tukel stressed that one of the best ways to keep up-to-date on everything going on in the department is by visiting the department's website often (the very one you are reading right now).
   
• Two of the department's major upcoming initiatives were discussed: a course this spring that involves a trip to Japan over Spring Break, and a two-day SAS workshop coming up in October. Taking advantage of both of these opportunities will be greatly beneficial to a student's resume and make for unique topics during the interview process. How many other job candidates could bring up during an interview that they have international supply chain experience in Japan? Many companies look for experience with SAS, so having familiarity with the package could help separate you from other candidates.
   
• In addition to the upcoming SAS workshop, it was revealed that the department is looking to put on an Excel workshop, with an emphasis on statistics, later in the semester. The workshops offered by the department would be hands on, so you physically practice at the computer as you learn.
   
• Lastly, Dr. Tukel encouraged all OSM majors to visit her at some point so that she can assist students in structuring their course schedules the best way possible. She would love nothing more than for all OSM majors to graduate from Cleveland State with an internship under their belt and a vast range of knowledge in the field of OSM.

With all of that information, plus free pizza, cookies, and refreshments for everyone to enjoy, the first OSM Meet and Greet was a success!
