Program Goals

The graduate program in Economics at Cleveland State University serves two types of students:

a. Those who are interested in continuing their studies at the Ph.D. level; and
b. Those who are interested exclusively in the terminal M.A. degree to advance themselves in the job market.

To meet the objectives of the program the department offers course work in four broad areas:

1. Mathematical Economics and Econometrics: In this grouping, students are required to take 9 semester hours of course work. These courses help students develop mathematical skills, statistical and econometrics skills which can be applied in problem solving.
2. Microeconomic Theory: 8 semester hours of course work in this area are required to provide strong analytical background in the theories of consumer and firm behavior, theories of markets, pricing and regulation.
3. Macroeconomic Theory, Money and Finance: 8 semester hours of course work in this area are required to provide students with an understanding of the workings of the economy and the world of money and finance.
4. Electives: 8 semester hours are required. Students have a choice of course work to develop a background in areas such as international trade and finance, urban economics, environmental and natural resource economics, economics of law, and finance. Students are exposed to areas where economic theory, mathematical modeling and econometrics tools can be used to explore, investigate and analyze different economic, political and social issues.

These 4 groupings make up the total of 33 required semester hours to complete the MA Program.

Prerequisite: ECN 610 and ECN 622 or equivalents.

Advanced Microeconomics (ECN 633) (4 sem. hrs)
Prerequisite or co-requisite: ECN 610 or equivalent & Intermediate Microeconomics.

Competition and Strategy (ECN 635) (4 sem. hrs)
Prerequisite or co-requisite: ECN 610 or equivalent & Intermediate Microeconomics.

Advanced Macroeconomics (ECN 643) (4 sem. hrs)
Prerequisite: ECN 610 or equivalent and Intermediate Macroeconomics.

Financial Economics (ECN 654) (4 sem. hrs)
Prerequisite: Intermediate Microeconomics.

Special Topics in Economics (ECN 694) (4 sem. hrs)
Prerequisite: Permission of Instructor. Course title and content may change from term to term.

Seminar in Economics (ECN 695) (4 sem. hrs)
Prerequisite: Permission of Instructor. Assignments chosen by instructor and include class presentations by students and writing assignments.

All required courses are offered in the evening.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The department follows the general requirements of the College of Graduate Studies regarding Regular and Provisional status. To be admitted as a Regular graduate student, the applicant must have a bachelor's degree with at least a 2.75 grade point average and have completed intermediate microeconomics, intermediate macroeconomics, calculus, and statistics. However, applicants who have not completed these courses may do so upon provisional admission to the program.

FINANCIAL AID

Financial aid in the form of a Graduate Assistantship is available to a limited number of qualified graduate students. Assistantships carry a stipend plus full or partial tuition support. Tuition scholarships are also available on a limited basis. Two letters of recommendation are required. Applications for students seeking a graduate assistantship must be completed by May 1st.

JOB PLACEMENT

The University provides job placement services through its Career Services Center. The department will assist students who are near completion or have completed its M.A. program in their search for suitable employment.
