The focus is on Ohio’s fiscal future
The Ohio Urban University Program (UUP) will present the fourth in a series of discussions with experts on timely topics affecting the fiscal future of the State of Ohio. The forum, entitled "What is going on? The macroeconomy in a turbulent time," will be held on Tuesday, May 5 at The Athletic Club of Columbus, Crystal Room, 136 East Broad Street, Columbus, from 4:00-5:30 p.m. There will be a reception immediately following. Check-in for the forum begins at 3:30 p.m.
The forum is designed to provide national and statewide insight on the state of the economic crisis, the current strategies circulating to address the crisis, and the implications on state and local fiscal and economic conditions.
DR. NEIL REID, is Associate Professor of Geography and Planning and Director of the Urban Affairs Center at The University of Toledo. He is an industrial geographer whose current research interests focus on the growth mechanisms that underpin local economic development. He has a particular interest in the theory and practice of industrial clusters and the role that these can play in helping local economies remain globally competitive.
DR. EDWARD (NED) HILL will present an overview of the macroeconomy and an update on the causes of the current recession, the impact of the recession on industries that are critical to Ohio, and a discussion of public policy challenges that face our state and the nation. This presentation is an update of a presentation that was given by Dr. Hill to new legislators in November 2008. The presentation will be followed by comments, questions, and discussion from the audience.
Dr. Hill is the Chair of the Ohio Urban University Program, the Interim Dean at Cleveland State University’s (CSU) Levin College of Urban Affairs, and CSU’s Vice President for Economic Development. Hill is also a Non-resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and a Non-resident Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Urban and Regional Development at the University of California at Berkeley.
The UUP Forums in Columbus are presented by the Ohio Urban University Program (UUP), a program of the University System of Ohio and the Ohio General Assembly. The UUP is a unique network that links the resources of Ohio's urban universities with the communities and students they serve in a cooperative effort to boost economic development efforts in the state's urban regions. UUP universities are Cleveland State University, The University of Akron, The University of Cincinnati, Kent State University, The Ohio State University, The University of Toledo, Wright State University, and Youngstown State University.
