The Emperor's New Clothes is based on the Hans Christian Andersen story about an emperor who cares about nothing but his appearance and fashion. When he hires two weavers to create a new royal garment for him, they present him with a suit that is "invisible to those who are unfit for their positions, stupid or incompetent." What the weavers have really done is create nothing but a tale, leading the emperor to parade around the kingdom in nothing but his ego.
According to producer and director Aaron Benson, "I just want the show to be a fun, colorful, zany adventure for all ages. We're bringing in the next generation of audiences and performers, showing them how exciting and engaging live theater can be. We're teaching them not about passively watching something like TV or a movie, but about interacting and feeling the joy of live theater." The show will include vibrant storytelling, lots of laughs and even some dancing.
The Emperor's New Clothes features CSU students and community members. Keeping the lights on in the CSU Factory Theatre this summer, the program will provide jobs for as many as 20 people in the performing arts in Cleveland at a time when many students flee the city for summer vacations or summer stock employment elsewhere. The Little Vikings Children's Theatre company members will get the full experience of acting, set-building, costuming, ushering, marketing and leading workshops this summer.
