Math Placement Testing Information

Cleveland State University offers the ability to the Math Placement Test and the practice test in the convenience of your home or anywhere you have an internet connection.  The Math Placement test is the first step required of all new freshmen and those transfer students who have not successfully completed college-level math courses. The Math Placement Test Process must be completed prior to enrolling in any math course. The Math Placement test is required of all new students prior to signing up for freshman orientation.

The objective of the online placement test is to assess the student's level of proficiency in mathematics and place them into math courses that commensurate with their level of competency. The results will help your Academic Advisor determine the most appropriate math course you take your first semester. It is absolutely critical that you take the placement exam seriously. The results of this examination will determine the number of mathematics classes you need to complete your CSU degree. Taking unneeded mathematics classes because of a poor performance on the placement examination may result in spending hundreds of extra dollars and delaying your graduation.

*Please take the practice placement test* (see below) to ensure your best performance on the placement exam. It is in the your best interest to have the placement test reflect your own work. Placing at a level higher than your true ability will result in failing a class and falling behind in your mathematics sequence.

Students exempted from the Math Placement Test:

  • Students with AP math credits and/or students who transfer college-level (non-remedial) math credits from another college are not required to take the math placement test. Students who have successfully completed college level (non-remedial) math credits as a Post Secondary Enrollment Options Program (PSEOP) student are not required to take the math placement test.
  • These students should meet with an Academic Advisor to assess their transfer math credits to identify the math course(s) in which they are eligible to enroll or to determine that they need to take the math placement test.

The Math Placement Test Process:

  • Students with Math ACT/SAT test scores of 21/510 or below are required to take the math placement test.
  • Students with Math ACT/SAT test scores of 22/520 or above are automatically placed into a college level math class (MTH 167 or lower)However, if you are planning on majoring in the following fields, you will need to take the Math Placement Exam.  Testing into the calculus series of math will save you time towards graduation:
    • Civil, Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering
    • Computer Information Science
    • Biology
    • Chemistry
    • Geology
    • Mathematics
    • Pharmaceutical Sciences

  • First year students who are not required to submit standardized test scores (those who are 5 years or more out of high school) and do not have AP math credits are required to take the math placement test.
