CSU Faculty and Staff Honored at President’s Convocation

Joanne E. Goodell, Ph.D., received the Dr. Jennie S. Hwang Award for Faculty Excellence at Cleveland State University’s 2014 President’s Convocation.

CSU President Ronald M. Berkman presented the award to Dr. Goodell during a ceremony Thursday, October 2, in Waetjen Auditorium.

Dr. Goodell, a professor of teacher education, joined the College of Education and Human Services at CSU in 1999. In addition to teaching secondary mathematics methods courses and qualitative research classes in the doctoral program, she has advised and mentored countless students. Focused on improving the quality of instruction, particularly in math and science, she has been the principle investigator or active leader on 13 externally funded grants totaling $15 million.

For the past three years, Dr. Goodell has served as president of the Faculty Senate. She also has served on the Graduate Council, the Academic Steering Committee, the University Research Council and the University Curriculum Committee.

Dr. Goodell is co-director of both the CSUteach program and the STEMM Education Center. She was recently appointed to serve on the first UTeach STEM Educators Association Board.

The Dr. Jennie S. Hwang Award is the highest honor for CSU faculty members in all disciplines and recognizes individuals for bringing regional, national and international recognition to the University through exceptional achievements in teaching, research and service. The award is named after Dr. Jennie S. Hwang, a member of the Cleveland State University Foundation board of directors and founder, president and CEO of H Technologies Group. She established the award through a gift to the Foundation to help inspire faculty to ever-increasing levels of excellence. Each year, one awardee is chosen from the men and women honored by the University’s Distinguished Faculty Program.

Dr. Goodell also received a Distinguished Faculty Award for Service.
