CSU School of Film & Media Arts Students Collaborate with Playhouse Square to Celebrate Pride
Cleveland State University's School of Film & Media Arts has partnered with Playhouse Square to produce vibrant and celebratory content for Playhouse Square’s Marquee Moments presented by GE Lighting, a Savant company. "Pride at Playhouse Square" is a stunning blend of animation and live-action sequences that highlights and celebrates Pride, Cleveland and the iconic Playhouse Square.
Bringing together many local artists, professionals and allies of the LGBTQIA+ community, the project serves as a testament to inclusivity, creativity and community spirit. The videos not only showcase the creativity and skills of Cleveland’s emerging filmmakers but also emphasize the city’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
“With the powerfully captivating network we’ve created throughout our district, we wanted to provide members of the community and visitors from out-of-town with playful, artistic experiences to enjoy as they arrive at the theater, walk to a restaurant or explore downtown Cleveland,” said Playhouse Square President & CEO Craig Hassall. “We are so pleased to showcase the creativity and talent of the incredible CSU School of Film & Media Arts students on our media network and to celebrate Pride together in this special way.”
Laura Bloomberg, president of Cleveland State University added, “Thanks to this collaboration with Playhouse Square, our students have a unique opportunity to share their artistic vision with downtown Cleveland. CSU is a proud participant in Pride Month in Cleveland, and our students are expressing their own pride and support in a new way this year.”
As the marquees light up with a timelapse from day to night on the Cleveland skyline, a spectacular visual of a disco ball descends from the sky. This magical moment transforms the city into a lively celebration filled with dancing, laughter, and joy, capturing the essence of Pride and the vibrant energy of Cleveland.
“Collaborating with Playhouse Square was a dream experience for the students,” said Professor Anita Gabrosek, who led the project. “They got to take a project from concept ideation to completion while having to answer to a client. The students really rose to the challenge and were such professionals throughout the process.”
Cigdem Slankard, director of the School of Film & Media Arts, emphasized the importance of such collaborations. “Cultivating partnerships with renowned organizations like Playhouse Square is invaluable for our students,” she said. “These collaborations provide students with the unique opportunity to see their work displayed on a premiere venue. It also facilitates connections between accomplished professionals and young talent, creating a win-win situation that enriches both the students’ educational experience and the cultural fabric of our city.”
The Pride at Playhouse Square Marquee Moment will be displayed throughout the month of June, aligning with global Pride Month celebrations. Residents and visitors are encouraged to experience this unique and uplifting presentation that honors love, acceptance and the diverse fabric of Cleveland.
