Donation Will Fund Efforts to Encourage High School Students to Pursue College Education and Engineering Careers
CLEVELAND – Cleveland State University's Fenn Academy has received a gift from Lincoln Electric. This donation will fund engineering recruiting as well as the general activities of Fenn Academy, which provides educational activities designed to encourage high school students to pursue a college education and careers in engineering. Fenn Academy is a partnership among the Fenn College of Engineering at CSU, 44 Northeast Ohio high schools, five government agencies and five donor corporations.
"Lincoln Electric is pleased to support Fenn Academy's mission to nurture the next generation of engineers," said Christopher L. Mapes, president and chief executive officer of Lincoln Electric.
"We are very grateful for this generous gift from Lincoln Electric," said Dr. Anette Karlsson, dean of the Fenn College of Engineering. "This significant investment in the future of engineering by one of Cleveland's leading companies will allow Fenn Academy to continue to point talented students toward rewarding careers in engineering."
During the 2012-2013 academic year, Fenn Academy staff spoke to more than 1,000 high school students and also met hundreds more through participation in college and career fairs. Activities included on-campus Engineering Activity Days, a job shadowing program, an engineering open house for 130 students and parents and an engineering faculty speakers program. Fenn Academy continues to collaborate with other organizations to promote STEM opportunities, including the Ohio STEM Learning Network, the ACE Mentor Program of Cleveland, the Cleveland Engineering Society, College Now, Upward Bound, the Six District Educational Compact, the West Shore Career Technical Education District and the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.
