Dr. Bubenik Awarded the Largest Research Grant in the History of the Department of Mathematics
The Office of Research would like to congratulate Dr. Peter Bubenik on his recent grant from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR). Dr. Bubenik is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics. His award, "Statistical inference from the topology of complex networks", runs from March 1, 2013 to February 29, 2016, and is the largest research grant ($279,430.00) in the history of the Department of Mathematics. Congratulations Dr. Bubenik!
Dr. Bubenik credits two internal awards from the Office of Research at Cleveland State University as instrumental in helping him obtain this AFOSR grant. Dr. Bubenik received a Faculty Research Development (FRD) award, "Data analysis using statistics and topology", which ran from July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2011, as well as a Faculty Scholarship Initiative (FSI) award, "Topology and statistics for large data sets, with an application to brain imaging", covering the period of July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2013.

Topological descriptors have demonstrated their efficacy in capturing global qualitative features from complex high-dimensional data. They provide a promising alternative to conventional statistical analysis. The primary goal of the project funded by the AFOSR is to develop and study a new topological descriptor that is designed for statistical inference, and to use it for that purpose. A secondary goal is to develop this topological machinery from a more abstract point of view, providing a better framework for studying its stability and for extending the scope of this technology.
