ProfTALK: Signaling and Stanzas, Human Trafficking and Treble Clef
Each week, Cleveland State University will profile new faculty members with a “getting to know you” feature called ProfTALK. Learn about your prof’s background, bona fides and how they contribute to the momentum of Engaged Learning. Then get behind the desk and learn a little more about what makes them tick. This week, we tread into human trafficking and gender equity in music school programs. Meet Rachel E. Lovell, Ph.D., and Trevor Marcho, Ph.D.!
Criminology, Anthropology, and Sociology Assistant Professor Rachel E. Lovell, Ph.D.
Ph.D., Sociology, The Ohio State University (2007)
M.A., Sociology, Baylor University (2001)
B.A., Sociology, Baylor University (2000)
Dr. Lovell is a sociologist and methodologist whose research focuses on gender-based violence and victimization – particularly sexual assault/rape, human trafficking, and intimate partner violence/ domestic violence. Dr. Lovell is currently directing large action research projects on untested sexual assault kits in Cuyahoga County (in collaboration with the Cuyahoga County Sexual Assault Kit Task Force) and in Akron (in partnership with the Akron Police Department) with funding provided by the Bureau of Justice Assistance’s Sexual Assault Kit Initiative. Dr. Lovell is also the principal investigator on a National Institute of Justice grant to employ machine learning technology to analyze the narratives of thousands of sexual assault police reports for “signaling” language regarding a victim’ s credibility. Prior to arriving at CSU, Dr. Lovell was a Research Assistant Professor in the Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education at Case Western Reserve University.
What three words come to mind when you think of Cleveland State University?
Tradition. Progress. Innovation.
What is a common question you get from Cleveland State University students?
Not a common question, but a common theme of inquiry: many students want a better understanding of the pathway toward their eventual goal. Both in terms of long-term academic success and finding a meaningful career.
What do you like most about teaching and why?
The unrealized potential of each individual student is exhilarating. I have the privilege of shaping a small part of their futures.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I travel as much as I can. My favorite U.S. city is Miami. I can't get enough of the food, culture, and atmosphere.
Where is your favorite place in Cleveland and why?
Huntington Beach. The city view of downtown Cleveland is amazing.
What is a “fun fact” about you that many people may not know about you?
I grew up in Texas. Once during a large family outing, I was accidentally left behind in the wilderness near a river and had to walk home several miles. I was six years old.
What is your personal motto/mantra/axiom?
“Meaning. Mentorship. Metrics.”

In the Navy, he performed hundreds of military ceremonies and concerts for both military and civilian audiences around Tidewater, Virginia. Dr. Marcho earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Maine and taught courses there, too, – when he wasn’t otherwise occupied teaching elementary, middle and high school music classes! He earned a Ph.D. in music education from The Ohio State University, where he researched gender equity in school instrumental music programs. He lives with his wife, infant son and five-year-old boxer, Rupert, and enjoys traveling the world, cooking, homebrewing, hiking, biking and camping.
