Slate’s Dahlia Lithwick Headlines Panel on the Scalia Vacancy Oct. 18
Cleveland State University’s Cleveland-Marshall College of Law (1801 Euclid Ave.) will host a panel discussion on the ongoing political stalemate following the death of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, Tuesday, October 18 at 5 p.m. in the school’s Moot Court Room. The panel is headlined by Dahlia Lithwick, senior editor at Slate Magazine, contributing editor at Newsweek, and host of the Amicus Podcast.
The Supreme Court begins a new term under circumstances unprecedented in American history following the death of Justice Scalia on February 13. Senate leadership announced that no nominee of the sitting President would receive confirmation, producing one of the longest unfilled vacancies in the Court's entire history. “The Year Without a Justice: The Scalia Vacancy and the Future of the Supreme Court” will attempt to put the controversy in context and cut through the rhetoric to understand how the country can move forward with federal judicial nominations.
In addition to Lithwick, panelists include Kristine Lucius, Democratic chief counsel and staff director for the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, and Sara Schiavoni, John Carroll University lecturer and co-author of the Goldman, Schiavoni & Slotnick series on judicial nominations. Jeremy Paris, Group Plan Commission executive director and former chief nominations counsel for the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, will moderate the discussion.
The lecture is sponsored by Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, Alliance for Justice, American Constitution Society, Leadership Council on Civil and Human Rights, National Council of Jewish Women, and People for the American Way.
