When the U.S. Congress initially passed a resolution authorizing a request to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 "Women's History Week," the seeds were planted for Women's History Month.

Over the course of the next five years - and after being petitioned by the National Women's History Project, Congress passes "Pub. L. 100-9"- March 1987 was designated as the first "Women's History Month."
