CSU Men’s Basketball, Office of Civic Engagement Team Up to Help Cancer Patients

CSU Men’s Basketball, Office of Civic Engagement Team Up for Good CauseNothing says summer quite like a cookout and a game of cornhole. Throw in a raffle, and that's exactly what the Office of Civic Engagement (OCE) at Cleveland State University and the CSU men's basketball team were doing together on June 27 to benefit cancer patients at the Cleveland Hope Lodge.

The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge is a community organization that offers free housing and facilities to cancer patients actively in treatment and their caregivers. Opened in 1995 by Joseph and Jeannette Sibler, the Cleveland location offers 31 rooms to residents along with facilities such as a library and a recreational/living room space for activities like art therapy, musical chairs, bingo, movies, yoga and meditation. It also provides a wealth of functional amenities including laundry, kitchenettes and outdoor patio areas, to name a few.

“This was a wonderful night of engagement in the Cleveland community, and I, along with our whole CSU team, were so fortunate to have been there,” said OCE Director Anita Ruf-Young. “Being able to partner a couple times a year with the men’s basketball team when we can support our community nonprofit resources like Hope Lodge, the Greater Cleveland Foodbank or the St. Augustine Hunger Center while spreading the Viking spirit is a highlight of our work.”

As part of the festivities, staff from the Hope Lodge gave a private tour to the group from Cleveland State, helping provide a better understanding of their services, which include providing a home away from home in a much-needed and beautiful facility.

"Cancer affects us all in some way, and being able to support those in the fight against it at Hope Lodge has been a humbling experience for our team," said Coach Daniyal Robinson.

“It's not just about basketball; it's about making a meaningful impact in our community and standing together with those who inspire us with their resilience."

“The raffle and photo booth were big hits, and we are so thankful that the residents and their caregivers were so welcoming to all of us,” said Ruf-Young. “We enjoyed getting to know many of the residents and their caregivers who were so grateful and kind when they were the ones going through so much; their positive spirits touched me and the rest of our CSU group!”

Chris Pawlowski serves as the assistant manager at the Cleveland Hope Lodge. He said the evening couldn’t have been more perfect.

“This was a night of nights at Hope Lodge where the CSU Office of Civic Engagement and men’s basketball team came in and brought fun and laughter to our beautiful cancer patients and guests,” he said. “The young men displayed remarkable personality and engagement, participating in bingo and raffles. I also want to commend the coaching staff, who have assembled such an incredible group of young men. We eagerly anticipate many more unforgettable nights of fun and laughter!”

Assistant Coach Travis Lewis said the night was just one of the many that will have a lasting impact on the student athletes who participated.

Together, we're not only shaping young athletes but also empowering our entire city through meaningful engagement and support,” he said.

“It's about fostering a culture where basketball meets community impact, making Cleveland State and Cleveland stronger together.”
