60 Years of Cleveland State University

December 18, 2024

Dear campus community,

On this day in 1964, Ohio Governor James Rhodes signed Amended House Bill No. 2 into law, establishing Cleveland State University as Ohio’s newest public university. Since that day, more than 145,000 students have graduated from CSU, and thousands of faculty and staff members have come to CSU to serve our students and see to their success.

When it was first presented to Gov. Rhodes that the state establish a public university in the City of Cleveland, the Governor replied that it was “an excellent suggestion.” That excellent suggestion has grown into Cleveland’s university, enriching the communities of Cuyahoga County, Northeast Ohio and beyond for six decades.

Now, as we look to the coming years, we envision the ways in which CSU will provide future generations of students with educational experiences that change lives. Today, let’s celebrate 60 years of Cleveland State University and continue our University’s legacy as an institution where everyone thrives.

Sincerely,

Laura Bloomberg, PhD
President
