Professional certifications, industry credentials, licensure programs, apprenticeships, and workforce training often represent significant college-level learning. Through Cleveland State University's Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) framework, students may be eligible to earn academic credit when that learning aligns with CSU course learning outcomes.

This pathway is designed for students who have gained knowledge and skills through professional practice, formal training programs, military occupations, industry-recognized certifications, licensure, or other structured learning experiences outside the traditional college classroom.

Credit is awarded based on demonstrated learning—not simply possession of a credential. Faculty review and academic standards remain central to all credit decisions.

How It Works

Students identify a certification, credential, license, apprenticeship, or training program they would like reviewed.
Faculty evaluate the credential and determine whether it aligns with CSU course learning outcomes.
If approved, academic credit may be awarded according to program-specific guidelines.
Credit is posted to the student's academic record following university procedures.
