How Professional Experience May Be Reviewed

Within the Levin College of Public Affairs and Education, the application of professional certifications and prior professional experience is subject to additional review due to Ohio teacher licensure and accreditation requirements.

Common Experience Areas Reviewed

Professional experience related to teaching and instructional support roles may be reviewed on an individual basis.

Review Process

Teacher preparation programs require supervised student teaching experiences, commonly referred to as Internship I and Internship II. These experiences are core licensure requirements and are not automatically waived through prior learning or professional credentials.

Important Limitations

In limited cases, Intern I may be considered for waiver based on documented, relevant professional experience, such as:

  • A minimum of two years of teaching experience in a preschool setting, or
  • A minimum of one year of experience as a paraprofessional in a school setting

Consideration requires a formal petition process, including:

  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Review and sign-off by the academic advisor
  • Final review and approval by the department chair

Approval is not guaranteed, and submission of a petition does not replace required coursework, field experiences, or licensure examinations.

Next Steps / Contact

Students interested in teacher licensure and exploring whether prior professional experience may be reviewed should contact the Levin College early in their academic planning.
