Q: What is CPL?
A: Credit for Prior Learning lets you earn CSU credit for knowledge gained outside a traditional classroom.
 

Q: Who can apply for CPL?
A: Any degree-seeking CSU student. Availability depends on your college, program, and the type of learning.
 

Q: How do I start?
A: Meet with your academic coach. Military-affiliated students may also connect with their military advisor.
 

Q: Does CPL credit count toward the residence requirement?
A: Some pathways do, others don’t. Portfolio and departmental exams may count; AP, CLEP, IB, industry credentials, and military credit do not.

Q: Is there a limit?
A: Yes. Up to 90 credits may be earned through portfolio assessment and credit by examination. At least 30 credits must be completed at CSU to graduate.
 

Q: How is CPL graded?
A: Many CPL pathways are graded Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) and do not affect GPA.
 

Q: Does CPL cost anything?
A: Some pathways are free (JST transfer, CLEP). Portfolio and departmental exams may charge evaluation fees.
 

Q: Does CPL apply to every course?
A: No. CPL applies only where your prior learning matches CSU’s course outcomes. Some courses (especially in accredited/licensed programs) may not be available.
