Tips for Being a Successful Online Learner

Online learning is convenient, but it also requires the right attitude and work ethic to succeed. Prior to enrolling in an online course, you should read the following expectations to see if you are ready for eLearning and identify areas where you might need help.

Expectations for Students:

Stay Up to Date:

• LOGIN - Login several times every week, ideally login daily. If you don't log in for a period of time, chances are you will miss an assignment or activity.
• Use the Course Content link on the homepage to retrieve information about each week's assignments.
• Course content includes learning modules that contain learning objectives, readings/materials, and links to any required assignments, discussions, activities, etc. for the week.

Read the module overviews pages thoroughly:

• Check your email/course messages and announcements each time you login.
• Time on Task - Stay up-to-date on your readings and assignments.
• Submit assignments on time to avoid late penalties and/or being overwhelmed down the road.
• Participate in discussions constructively and learn from your instructors' feedback on assignments.
• Understand the technology used in the course and seek assistance if you do not know how to use it.

Plan Your Time:

• Spend as much or more time on this course as you do your classroom/face-to-face courses.
• Plan to spend the time you would normally spend in class reading and reviewing the reading and lecture materials.
• Allow adequate time to complete the weekly assignments and papers.

Online Presence:

In your role as an online student, you are in charge of the following:

• Complete all assignments on time as you would for courses in face-to-face settings.
• Personal accountability: it's important that you are present, responsible and ask questions.
• If you need help, try connecting with your peers, ask a classmate to become your study buddy, or contact the instructor using their preferred method of communication.
