Academic Coach & Faculty Advisor Resources

Identifying Courses

  • Core Course Spreadsheet - As courses are in the process of approval and programming, this spreadsheet is the best source for identifying core curriculum courses.
  • Approved Course List - Contains all courses fully approved and programmed by the registrar. Shorter list than the spreadsheet.
  • Inquiry Pathways & Courses - This page briefly describes each Inquiry Pathway and provides a list of the associated courses.
  • GenEd08 Courses Not Continuing in Core - This spreadsheet lists GenEd08 courses that have not (yet) been re-submitted for the Core Curriculum. The list will be updated dynamically but should be considered 95% accurate for Academic Year 25-26.
  • When searching for approved courses, always start with the Core Curriculum approved course lists. For GenEd08 students, you can then use the crosswalk (linked below) to determine which GenEd08 category the course will satisfy.

Understanding the new Core

GenEd08-to-Core Crosswalk

  • GenEd08-to-Inquiry Core Crosswalk - This page indicates the general mapping of GenEd08 categories onto the new Inquiry Core Categories, and vice versa. Not all courses will perfectly follow these crosswalks, but they are accurate for the vast majority of courses.
  • A small number of GenEd08 courses will be changing their category due to their inclusion in the new core. This change will mean the "ICC to GenEd08" crosswalk is accurate for the courses, but it also means which category the course fulfills will vary with when the student completed it.
    • Courses will retain their original GenED08 category approval through the end of Summer 25.
    • Starting Fall 25, the courses will count in their new GenEd08 category that aligns with their Inquiry Core category.
    • See the GenEd08-Inquiry Core Crosswalk page for the list of affected courses.

Key Differences from GenEd08

  • Reduction in total credit hours from 39 to 37
  • No university-wide capstone requirement. Some programs will maintain their own capstone requirement.
  • Introduction to University Life (ASC 101 and equivalents), a 1-credit hour requirement is replaced with Inquiry Launch, a 3-credit hour requirement.
    • Inquiry Launch will continue to be waived for transfer students but some inquiry launch courses may be used to satisfy major requirements (e.g., in engineering).
  • The "Quantitative & Formal Reasoning" requirement replaces the GenEd08 "Math/Quantitative Literacy" requirement. Students are only required to complete 3 credit hours in the new requirement, rather than 6.
  • Addition of a "Data & Digital Literacy" requirement. This 'replaces' the second social science course in GenEd08.
    • Students may fulfill this requirement by completing a course in the category or by completing a second "Quantitative & Formal Reasoning" course
  • The "Global Human Perspectives" requirement replaces the GenEd08 "Africa, Latin America, Asia, & the Middle East" (ALAAME) requirement.
    • "Global Human Perspectives" courses are all approved as Arts & Humanities courses with a significant non-Western culture focus
    • There is no Social Science-ALAAME equivalent in the new core
  • WAC/SPAC requirement has been reduced from 3 courses to 2 courses
    • WAC/SPAC courses cannot also be approved for a Core Curriculum category. The two sets of courses are now wholly distinct, with WAC/SPAC courses typically being upper-division courses
    • The same transfer rules still apply: students entering with 60+ transfer credits may waive 1 WAC/SPAC course (bringing their requirements now to 1 course rather than 2)
    • At least one of a major's required WAC/SPAC courses must not also be its designated capstone course

Retroactive Changes to GenEd08

To facilitate a smooth transition, some modifications are being made to GenEd08 to bring it more in line with the new core. All such changes should reduce or otherwise relax requirements for students.

  • Increased flexibility for programs to substitute courses for their program capstone requirement, in light of the elimination of the university-wide capstone requirement. This simply means that programs
  • Reduction in WAC/SPAC requirement from 3 courses to 2 courses
  • Students will no longer need their "Arts & Humanities" or "Social Science" GenEd08 requirements to be fulfilled by courses from different departments
  • Removal of "one course must be Math" requirement from the Math/Quantitative Literacy requirement. Students may complete their GenEd08 Math/QL requirements by completing any two courses in the Inquiry Core "Quantitative & Formal Reasoning" category

Academic Coaches are encouraged to send AdComs now for Spring 2025 graduates if they would benefit from any of the retroactive changes to GenEd08.
